Clean a text's line structure: trim stray spaces from the start and end of every line and drop the empty lines entirely — for pasted text that arrives ragged.
How to use this tool
- Paste your text into the input box.
- Click Run Tool. Each line is trimmed at both ends and blank lines are removed.
- Copy the tidied text from the result panel.
Common uses
Cleaning lists copied out of PDFs and web pages, preparing one-item-per-line data for another tool (sorter, deduplicator), tidying indented text pasted from an email, and removing the blank-line sprawl from exported documents.
How it works
The tool works line by line: leading and trailing whitespace — spaces and tabs — is stripped from each line, and any line left empty is removed from the output altogether. Two things it deliberately does not do: it does not collapse multiple spaces inside a line (a double space in a sentence survives), and it does not join lines together. The output has exactly your non-empty lines, in order, with clean edges.
Worked example
The paste
first item second item third item
becomes
first item second item third item
Three lines, no strays — ready to sort, dedupe or paste into a spreadsheet column. If you also need internal spacing normalised, follow with your editor's find-and-replace for double spaces; this tool's contract is edges and blank lines only.
Privacy and browser processing
Your text is cleaned in your browser with JavaScript — it is never uploaded or stored.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there still double spaces inside my sentences?
By design: the tool trims line edges and removes blank lines, but internal spacing is content-adjacent (code indentation, aligned columns) and is left alone. Most editors collapse internal runs with a two-space → one-space replace if you want it.
Does it remove indentation from code?
It removes leading whitespace from every line, which flattens indented code completely. This tool is for prose and lists; for code, use a formatter that understands structure instead.
What counts as an empty line?
A line containing only spaces or tabs is trimmed to nothing and then removed along with genuinely empty lines. The output therefore never contains a blank line anywhere.
Does it change line endings?
Lines are rejoined with standard newlines, so Windows CRLF endings in the paste come out as LF. Content is otherwise untouched.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The cleanup runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
