PDF Page Counter online
Count the pages in a PDF instantly — read from the file's own structure, locally, without opening a reader or uploading the document.
How to use this tool
- Choose the PDF file.
- The page count is read and displayed.
- Repeat for as many files as you need to inventory.
Common uses
Checking a document against a page-limit submission rule, estimating printing cost before you send a job, inventorying a folder of PDFs for a migration, and verifying a merge or split produced the expected total.
How it works
The counter loads the file with pdf-lib and reads the page tree's count — the number of page objects the document declares. That is the same number a reader shows, obtained without rendering anything, which is why it is instant even for heavy files. It counts pages as the file defines them: a scanned booklet saved with each spread as one wide image is one page here, however many printed folios it pictures.
Worked example
Three files for one submission — statement (4 pages), appendix (17) and certificates (2) — count out at 23 total, against a portal limit of 25: fits, with no reader opened and nothing uploaded. Merge them first and the counter verifies the combined file still says 23, catching a lost file before the portal does.
Privacy and browser processing
Your PDF is counted in your browser with pdf-lib — the file is never uploaded or stored.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the count differ from the numbers printed on pages?
Printed folios are content; the count is structure. Front matter in roman numerals, unnumbered plates and a cover all shift the printed numbers away from the file's page positions. When a form says "page 12", it almost always means the 12th page of the file.
Can it count pages in a protected PDF?
A password-protected file cannot be parsed without the password. Save an unprotected copy in a desktop reader first, then count it here.
Does it work for very large PDFs?
Counting reads the document structure, not every page's content, so even hundred-megabyte files count quickly — the limit is your browser opening the file at all.
Can I count many files at once?
Run them one at a time and note the figures, or merge a set first (PDF Merger here) and count the combined file for a total.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The file is parsed in your browser with pdf-lib; it never leaves your device.
