WebP Converter online

Convert images to WebP — the web's modern format that usually beats JPEG on size at the same quality — or convert WebP files back to JPG/PNG for tools that cannot read them.

Quick answer: Choose an image and convert it to WebP for supported web delivery workflows.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose an image (JPG, PNG or WebP).
  2. Click Convert. The image is re-encoded in the target format on a local canvas.
  3. Download the converted file from the result.

Common uses

Modernising a site's images for page-speed scores, shrinking photo uploads for a CMS, rescuing a WebP file that an editor or office app refuses to open, and preparing images for platforms with format whitelists.

How it works

WebP compresses with a newer codec than JPEG and supports both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency — the combination that let it replace both JPEG (photos) and many PNGs (graphics with alpha). Typical photo conversions save 25–35% against an equivalent-quality JPEG. The catch is compatibility at the edges: every modern browser displays WebP, but older desktop software, some email clients and a few social pipelines still reject it — which is why this converter runs in both directions.

Worked example

A product photo at 900 KB as JPEG comes back around 600–650 KB as WebP at comparable visual quality; across a 40-image category page that is roughly 11 MB of transfer removed. In the other direction, a WebP screenshot saved from a browser converts back to a PNG that any editor opens — a 30-second detour that beats fighting a format refusal.

Privacy and browser processing

Your image is converted in your browser on a local canvas — it is never uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP supported everywhere now?

In browsers, effectively yes — Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (since version 14) all display it. The holdouts are older desktop apps, some email clients and embedded systems. For the open web, WebP is a safe default; for email and office documents, JPEG remains the lingua franca.

Does converting to WebP lose quality?

The lossy mode discards a little, like JPEG does, tuned to be invisible at normal settings; the pixels a JPEG already lost are not restored either way. Converting a JPEG to WebP keeps its existing artifacts and shrinks the container around them.

Why is my WebP bigger than the original PNG?

For flat graphics with few colours, PNG's palette-style compression is extremely efficient and a lossy WebP at high quality can exceed it. Content decides the winner; the converter makes switching cheap enough to test.

Can it convert an animated WebP or GIF?

The canvas pipeline handles still images; an animated source converts using its first frame. For animation-preserving conversion, dedicated tooling (ffmpeg, cwebp with filters) is the route.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Conversion runs on a canvas in your browser; the image never leaves your device.
