QR Code Decoder online
A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores text, a web address, WiFi credentials or a contact card. This decoder reads the QR code from a photo or screenshot and shows you exactly what it contains, without asking you to install an app. Choose an image, drag it onto the drop zone, or paste it from the clipboard, and the contents appear as soon as the code is recognised. Everything is processed locally in your browser, so the picture never leaves your device.
How to use this tool
- Open QR Code Decoder in a modern browser.
- Upload, drop or paste a QR code image; the tool decodes it automatically.
- Review the decoded text and the detected type (URL, WiFi, vCard or text).
- Copy the result or open a detected link.
Detected content types
The decoder inspects the payload and labels it so you know what you are looking at. A URL is shown as a clickable link with an open button. WiFi codes are split into network name, security type and password, with the password masked until you reveal it. vCard codes are broken into name, phone and email. Anything else is shown as plain text.
Getting a reliable scan
Recognition depends on image quality. A sharp, well-lit photo taken straight on, with the QR code filling a good part of the frame, decodes most reliably. Glare on a screen, motion blur, a steep angle, heavy shadows or a very small code in a large photo can all cause a miss. If a scan fails, crop closer to the code, increase the contrast, or retake the photo under even lighting.
Privacy and browser processing
The image is decoded with JavaScript running in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared, so it is safe to use on screenshots that contain private information. Files larger than 10 MB are rejected to keep the page responsive.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image is decoded locally in your browser with JavaScript and is never sent to a server.
Which image formats are supported?
PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF (first frame) and BMP images up to 10 MB are supported.
Why does a QR code fail to decode?
Blur, glare, low contrast, a rotated angle or a code that is too small in the frame can prevent detection. Try a sharper, closer, well-lit photo.
Can it read WiFi and contact QR codes?
Yes. WiFi credentials, vCards and plain text are detected and shown with their individual fields.
