How to Write a Cron Expression (with Examples)

A cron expression is a compact five-field string that tells a scheduler when to run a job. This guide explains each field, the special characters, and the schedules people need most, so you can write a correct expression on the first try.

Quick answer: Read the five fields as minute, hour, day-of-month, month and day-of-week, then test the expression in the Cron Parser to see its next five run times.

The five fields

Every standard cron line has five space-separated fields: minute hour day month weekday. The minute and hour are 0-59 and 0-23; day-of-month is 1-31; month is 1-12 (or JAN-DEC); weekday is 0-7 where both 0 and 7 mean Sunday (or SUN-SAT). The string 30 8 * * 1-5 therefore means 08:30, every weekday.

The special characters

* matches every value, */n steps every n-th value (*/15 = every 15 minutes), a-b is an inclusive range, and a,b,c lists specific values. Quartz schedulers add ? (no value), L (last day / last weekday), W (nearest weekday) and # (nth weekday, e.g. 2#3 = third Tuesday).

Ready-made schedules

  • * * * * * - every minute
  • 0 * * * * - every hour on the hour
  • 0 0 * * * - every day at midnight
  • 0 9 * * 1 - every Monday at 09:00
  • 0 0 1 * * - the first of every month
  • */15 9-17 * * 1-5 - every 15 minutes, 9-17, Monday to Friday

Day-of-month OR weekday

When both the day-of-month and the weekday fields are restricted, cron treats them as an OR. 0 9 1 * 1 runs at 09:00 on the 1st of the month or on any Monday - not only when the 1st is a Monday. This is the single most common cron surprise.

5-field vs Quartz 6/7-field

Quartz-style schedulers prepend a seconds field, and some append a year field, giving six or seven fields. The Cron Parser auto-detects the field count, so you can paste an expression from crontab, Spring, Kubernetes or Quartz without rewriting it.

Frequently asked questions

What does L mean in cron?

In the day-of-month field L means the last day of the month; in the weekday field it means the last occurrence of that weekday, so 5L is the last Friday.

What does W mean in cron?

W picks the nearest weekday to a date. 15W is the weekday closest to the 15th, useful for payroll and billing jobs.

What does # mean in cron?

# selects the nth weekday of the month. 2#3 is the third Tuesday.

Does a cron tool upload my expression?

No. The DailyWebKit cron parser runs entirely in your browser.
